The Tree and Its Characteristics
A Teak tree is a large, straight-stemmed tree that can reach heights of up to 200 feet. Its crown is spreading, and its branchlets have large quadrangular piths. The leaves are about 0.5 metres long and 23 cm wide and are opposite or sometimes whorled in young specimens. The tree bears small white flowers in large, erect, cross-branched panicles, and its fruit is a drupe (fleshy, with a stony seed) 1.7 cm in diameter. The bark of the stem is about 1.3 cm thick, grey or brownish grey, and the sapwood is white. The heartwood has a pleasant and strong aromatic fragrance and a beautiful golden yellow color, which on seasoning darkens into brown, mottled with darker streaks. The timber retains its aromatic fragrance to a great age.

Uses of Teak Wood:
Teak wood’s durability, dimensional stability, and weather-resistant properties make it one of the most valuable timbers in the world. Its uses are varied and many, ranging from shipbuilding, fine furniture, door and window frames, piers, bridges, cooling-tower louvres, flooring, panelling, railway cars, and Venetian blinds. In addition, teak wood is also used for decorative purposes, such as parquetry, turnery, carving, lining, and panelling. Teak wood’s high resistance to weathering and rotting makes it an ideal choice for outdoor furniture that can withstand the elements for decades without rotting or warping.
Durability and Resistance
The Teak tree and its wood are renowned for durability and resistance to insects, rot, and weathering. Its natural oils make it resistant to moisture, which enhances its water and fungi-resistant armour. The wood is practically imperishable undercover and can last for centuries in buildings and structures. Beams of teak wood in good preservation are often found in buildings many centuries old, and teak beams have lasted in palaces and temples for more than 1,000 years. The timber is also termite-resistant, although untreated sapwood is susceptible to borer attack.

Teak Wood Production and Trade
Myanmar is the largest producer of teak wood in the world, followed by Indonesia, India, and Thailand. Since the mid-1980s, numerous countries have restricted teak logging to control deforestation. Teak plantations have been established in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Africa, the Solomon Islands, Fiji, and the West Indies.
Conclusion:
The Teak tree and its wood have been highly valued for centuries for their durability and resistance to insects, rot, and weathering. Teak wood is a versatile material with varied uses ranging from shipbuilding to decorative purposes. With its dimensional stability and weather-resistant properties, teak wood is an excellent choice for outdoor furniture and building materials that can last for decades or even centuries. Whether looking for a beautiful piece of furniture or building materials for your home or business, teak wood is a valuable and durable choice.
